The East Bulgarian is a light, moderatly large horse which was only recognised as a breed in the 1950's.

History
The East Bulgarian was developed at the end of the 19th century at the Vassil Kolarov stud farm near Shuman and at Bojurishte near Sofia, in Bulgaria, by crossing local Arabs, Anglo-Arabs, English Thoroughbreds and English half-breds. Once the characteristics had been established, only English thoroughbred blood was used to improve the quality of the stock and the breed was recognised in 1951.

Breed Characteristics
The East Bulgarian is a highly attractive horse of great refinement and quality that excels in all sorts of riding capacities from jumping to dressage and is also a very useful light dtaft animal. Typically, they have quiet but energetic temperaments and are nicely put together, with good conformation. In appearance, they have a fine head with a straight profile and large kind eyes. The head should be well set to an elegant, muscular neck which is quite strong and slopes into prominent withers. They have good, powerful shoulders, a broad and deep chest, a straight, long back, a slightly sloping croup, and well-made, long, hard legs. They are mostly chestnut, bay or black in colour, and stand between 15 and 16 hands high.​

The East Bulgarian is a light riding and draft horse, usually chestnut, bay or black. They have originated since 1900 from Thoroughbred and English Halfbred crossed with Anglo-Arab, Arab and Bulgarian Native horses​
